3. The Book of Eli ——
Director: Albert Hughes
Release Date: January 15
Comments:
Cast: Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Michael Gambon, Tom Waits
COED’s Take: Terminator Salvation disappointed, Doomsday flopped, and The Road got delayed a year and still hasn’t come out yet. So will The Book of Eli swoop in and take the Great Post-Apocalyptic Movie crown? Denzel Washington usually does contemporary thrillers, so it’ll be cool to see
him in a sci-fi flick, but who we’re really pumped about is Gary Oldman, in an over-the-top bad guy role that anyone who’s seen The Professional knows he’s ridiculously awesome at playing. Oh, and Mila Kunis is hot.
4. Alice in Wonderland March 5
Director: Tim Burton
Release Date: March 5
Comments:
Plot outline: Tim Burton and Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter) take on Lewis Carroll’s classic.
Cast: Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, Michael Sheen, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Crispin Glover, Christopher Lee
COED’s Take: Who better to take on Carroll’s cracked-out, drug-influenced Alice in Wonderland than Burton and Depp? Plus, the six of you who saw the first season of HBO’s In Treatment already know that Mia Wasikowska will give a terrific, star-making performance as Alice. The only red
flag? An odd March release date. We thought the combination of Depp and a big budget made for an automatic summer debut.
5.The Expendables
Director: Sylvester Stallone
Release Date:april 23
Comments:
Plot Outline: A team of mercenaries head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator.
Cast and Crew: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Brittany Murphy, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren
COED’s Take: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Ivan Drago Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin and Randy Couture are a team of mercenaries headed to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator. How F’ing awesome is that?! As soon as I
hear “written and directed by Sylvester Stallone” my ears perked up. Throw in the action movie hall of fame cast and you’ve got a winning formula. Sure this movie probably won’t win an Oscar, but the body count will be ridiculously high and your balls might explode from a surge of
testosterone.
6.Iron Man 2
Director: Jon Favreau
Release Date:MAy 7
Comments:Plot outline: Tony Stark, with his buddy Jim Rhodes, squares off against Whiplash and the Black Widow while continuing discussions with Nick Fury about the Avengers Initiative.
7.Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time  — May 28
Release Date:
Comments:
8.Jonah Hex
Director: Jimmy Hayward
Release Date:June 18
Comments:Plot outline: In the late 1800s, a Wild West bounty hunter tracks a voodoo practitioner bent on raising an army of Confederate zombies.
Cast: Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich, Will Arnett, Michael Shannon
COED’s Take: Okay, first, that’s the coolest synopsis ever. Second, Josh Brolin is the man — after No Country for Old Men and W., who better to take on a cool-as-hell bounty hunter? But then there are two other factors which sweeten the deal, and they both involve Megan Fox.
9.The Last Airbender
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Release Date:July 2
Comments:Plot outline: Based on the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, the story takes place in a world divided into the Fire, Water, Earth, and Air Nations. A young “airbender” named Aang must stop the Fire Nation from taking over.
Cast: Noah Ringer, Dev Patel, Cliff Curtis, Jackson Rathbone, Shaun Toub, Aasif Mandvi
COED’s Take: This will either be a really cool movie or an epic failure to end all epic failures. M. Night Shyamalan finally branches beyond his patented thrillers, which is nice since The Happening and Lady in the Water sucked. But is he up for this kind of big-budget fantasy? Few people have
heard of the source material, which means box office is pretty shaky unless the ad campaign wows a lot of people. But it will be cool to see Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel try to make a name for himself beyond last year’s Best Picture winner.
10. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I   —-
Director: David Yates
Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Bonnie Wright, Evanna Lynch, Alan Rickman
Release Date:November 19
Comments:
Plot outline: Harry, Ron, and Hermione go on the run from Death Eaters while trying to find the remaining Horcruxes.
COED’s Take: We’re still not thrilled about Warner Bros. splitting up Deathly Hallows into two movies, because c’mon: eight movies will just look weird on our DVD shelves. But Part I promises to be the darkest Potter film yet; not that they’d ever do this in a million years, but it’d be easy to make
an R rated cut, given all the torturing and killing that happens. Yep, you heard it here first, parents: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is all about torturing and killing.

Trying to scurry out of bed,  I gave myself five more minutes to appreciate the cold morning bliss.  What should I write about this time? Flying squirrels? Nah. The weather? Too lame. Myself? No one would bother reading that dude!

Then it hit me! Gee, after seeing Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince a week ago and with G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra right around the corner, what comes next? Should I make my very own Top Ten list? Now that makes sense!

Browsing for info around the internet wasn’t very hard and I have been actually pondering about writing this article  for a while now. Thanks to the constant stream of  “teaser trailers” people have been linking like crazy this past few weeks, this could never have been any easier. Now, what to include in the list?

Hmm.. First, I didn’t include remakes since I figured that it’d suck anyway. Rumors of upcoming movies like Robocop and Robin Hood are interesting of course, but nothing can replace the classics we’ve grown to adore. Second, the list is by no means counting down from what I think is the worst to the best to come. The numbering just indicates the order in which the film will be shown, based on their tentative screening dates.  And lastly, I could’ve made it a Top Twenty list but I’m just too lazy. With all that nonsense out of the way, let’s rock!

The Futuristic Movie Timeline

Hey! I didn’t know that we’ll be having robot cops and hoverboards in a few years! According to danmeth.com:

No one really pays much attention to what year sci-fi movies take place. I thought it would be interesting to arrange some classic films about the future into chronological order and see what we’d find. I’ve also charted the years in which they were released as well as the current year. This is by far the geekiest thing I’ve ever done.

* I only included movies in which Wikipedia knew the exact year.

Star Wars and Chipmunks

www.telegraph.co.uk featured some of Chris Veigh’s work regarding photos of  Star Wars figures and chipmunks. And yes, you read it right! Chipmunks.

In 2005 Chris befriended a female he later named Buddy after she was accidentally trapped in his dad’s garden shed. “It took a while until she totally trusted me,” said Chris. “But patience and a lot of almond offerings eventually paid off”

“Once I got close to them I realised I could pretty much do anything and they didn’t bat an eye-lid,” he explained.

“I’m not sure where the idea came from but I had plenty of Star Wars figures and I thought I could probably get one to sit on their backs without them caring. It all started from there,” he said.

New Moon Breaking News

Though I didn’t really like the Twilight movie nor the book (both were disappointing), I have news from Robert Pattison himself about the new movie he’s working on as the very mysterious, and wickedly handsome (according to some female Ewoks near me) vampire Edward Cullen.

According to thenerdybird.com:

Robert Pattinson has confirmed there will be a film version of the fourth and final Twilight book, Breaking Dawn. Pattinson told the Hollywood Reporter in Cannes on Tuesday “that he is committed to starring in the final outing to date but doesn’t know when backers Summit Entertainment will begin production because of the actor’s jam-packed shooting schedule.”

Pattinson also spoke about his role in New Moon which has been increased considerably. “You’re playing a figment in Bella’s imagination so I was trying to do it in a 2-D way. I hope it doesn’t translate onscreen as being boring,” he said, laughing. Hey, at least he’s aware.

And here’s the first official teaser poster for New Moon. Check it out and try not to smother your monitor with kisses okay? The Dark Lord of the Sith will not be pleased.

holy week survival guide 2

What a day! My comrades ditched me on what was supposed to be Number #6 on our list, a Prayer Meeting/ Inuman Session. Pfft! Well, here it goes:

TIP #6 Prayer Meeting/Inuman/Videoke

For this one, you can actually do this by yourself! (But it is much too depressing.)

What you need:

A cellphone (With load of course!)

An Old School Landline

Beer/ Gin/ Whiskey/ Whatever-Alcoholic-Drink-You-Can-Grab

You favorite pulutan. (Sisig!)

Guitar/ Videoke is optional.

You can contact your friends who’s also on the same boat as you. However, it may be a daunting task. Why?

Consider this: they were also ditched by friends and family, they have no money to buy prepaid load to reply to your messages, they lost the ability to use a regular phone due to too much texting, and they are still sulking in the corner like you.

Let’s CRUNCH some NUMBERS!

But don’t give up! Out of 18 people you may contact, you may have:

a 10% chance of getting a ‘Yes’,

a 20% No‘ replywith a bunch of STUPID alibis,

and 70% chance of getting ignored. Still, that’s two persons! Better than having none.

If ever you are lucky enough to pull enough people to join you in your misery err.. cause, make sure: everyone brings something (the more booze, the merrier!), you don’t get too loud (it’s Holy Week, remember?), and try to be discreet. (I advise that you stay indoors at this time, old folks might literally crucify you for your evildoings.)

Old school! Yeah!

Old school! Yeah!

TIP# 7 Use your Remote!

Fine, fine… You miss Wowowee, Eat Bulaga, or whatever crap noontime show you are usually watching. Your loyalty to a specific channel would not help you at this point. (Ehem… Kapuso? Kapamilya? WTF?)

Slowly take your remote control, yes, it is not just to turn the TV on and off, adjustingthe volume and nothing else. You can actually switch channels! YES, YOU CAN SWITCH CHANNELS. It is not a sin. I repeat, it is not a SIN.

After lifting up your remote, point it toward your television set and press Five twice. (Yes, start from a higher numbered cable channel so that you’d lose the urge of going back to 2 or 7, when you start on a lower numbered channel.) Then, start going down the channels. 55- 54- 53- 52- 51 … got it? Fight all urge to press number 2 or 7 once (or whatever cable channel equivalent it may have.)

Yes, you can actually watch movies on channels like HBO and Star Movies 24/7!

TIP # 8 Ragnaro– Wha–??

Try making a character on popular online games like RF Online, Cabal Online and dozens of others. If your friends ditched you in real life, well, good for you, you can find tons and tons of virtual friends. Of course, nothing can compare to real ones, but what the heck! They ditched you right? LOL.

TIP # 9 Advance!! (This one is for cubers…)

You already know how to solve the cube in N seconds, you can solve it One-Handed, know all the PLL’s and OLL’s there is to know, etc… Why not learn a more advanced technique or puzzle?

Try learning blindfold solving (like me), know more about commutators, solve a megaminx or a big cube, and teach your friends. I assure you, when you get back to your regular 3×3 cube, you’d be so much better.Having better recognition and execution, better look ahead in effect, making solving 3×3’s boring… I’m not really sure if that’s a good or bad thing, but it’s all up to you…

TIP # 10 Pray…

Surprised? Don’t be. This is the perfect time to reflect about your life, and your impact on others these past few months.

Did you make them happy? Are you happy? What bad habits would you like to change? Have you been a good son/ daughter? These are some things you can ponder about. And if you forgot how to pray the Holy Rosary, here’s something that might help you:

TIP # 11 Have Fun!

If I’m not mistaken,  this is the only TWO OFFICIAL CONSECUTIVE holidays (Marked RED on the calendar) in the Philippines, so better make good use of it. Bond with your family (if you’re always out working), make amends, contemplate, and relax.

Check out Part 1!

HOLY WEEK Survival Guide 1

Are you feeling lonely and left out?  (Because you’re friends and family ditched you (accidentally or not, still sucks)  on that oh-so-spectacular trip to the beach?) You’re company outing sucks and you didn’t want to go?  Or is it the other way around?! But still, you find yourself all alone…

Fear not, my Young (or Old)Padawan!   I will equip you with enough tips to survive this year’s Semana Santa or more Holy Weeks to come! (You can let go of the razor blade…=p)

TIP # 1 Food Rations!

Since most groceries and supermarkets close up during Holy Week (they’re on a vacation too, remember? Oh yeah! They left you… LOL),  it is wise to go shopping before this happens. Stock up on the bare essentials since you don’t know when they might come back. (They might enjoy the beach too much they might forget they left someone behind and stayed there for a month! )

Canned goods? Check!

Shampoo, soap, etc? Check!

Dog Food? Check! (Yeah, you have to feed them too!)

Anything you can fry? (Hotdogs, ham, eggs, tocino) Check!

TIP # 2 Movie Madness

Go to your nearest suking DVD seller or to Quiapo and buy dozens upon dozens of movies!

A good selection would be: Horror- Action- Suspense- Sci-fi- Horror- Fantasy-Korean in alternating order… Yes, I did not include Drama into the mix for obvious reasons!

Make sure that you’re getting more bang for your buck! You can buy 25-in-1 movie compilations of these for the same price of two new ones. What a bargain!

You can also get TV series Compilations even Anime Series like: Heroes, Supernatural, Grey’s Anatomy, House, Bleach, Naruto… (These titles are highly recommended by our panel of judges.)

TIP # 3 Gamer’s Heaven

If you’re not the movie buff type, you can also amuse yourself by brushing off the dust from your old Gameboy or beef up the number of games you have on your PSP.

Though playing with others is much more fun, that is a luxury we do not have…(Your imaginary friend does not count.)

Hadouken!

TIP# 4 Watch Free Anime Online

While the rest of the world is getting a higher risk of  developing skin cancer than you, you still have the right to go online. If you are still using bunny ears for your television set and “cable” for you is just a rubber cord, the internet can be your friend. (But how the hell did you find my site??)

You can watch anime shows online and even movies! Just go to crunchyroll.com and you are good to go…

There, you can find the latest episodes of your favorite anime series and watch Asian movies with a wide range of genres to choose from.  (Signing up could also give you additional perks.)

Hai!

TIP # 5 Manga Galore! (While others are doing Pabasa.)

So you’ve checked out the latest episode of Naruto: Shippuden and you’re itching to know if Kakashi lives??  Do not despair! You can check out the manga version of your favorite anime on onemanga.com!

Again, you can check out the scanned pages of your favorite manga for free! Cool huh?

Check out PART 2!

Geek Stuff: Marvel Movie Updates!

I stumbled upon this upon browsing the AOTS (Attack of the Show) blogs and something interesting caught my attention. It seems that when Sony Pictures Entertainment formally announced the release date of Spider-man 4 on May 6, 2011. This made Marvel Studios adjust the release dates of the other four super-hero movies in the works. Here’s the full article from IESB.net:

Marvel released a slew of new release dates for its films early today including THOR, THE AVENGERS and SPIDER-MAN 4!Paving the way for the production and release of “The Avengers,” Marvel announced today an adjusted release pipeline for its self-produced feature film properties that reflects the first time individual super hero characters and story arcs will be inter-woven and culminate in a multi-character motion picture.

Separately, Marvel Studios confirmed today that Sony Pictures Entertainment will release “Spider-Man 4” on May 6, 2011. Additionally, Marvel Studios has revised the release dates for “Thor” and “The First Avenger: Captain America” as part of its release strategy for an uninterrupted road to “The Avengers,” now debuting May 4, 2012.

A Marvel character-based film will now launch the summer box office season for three years in a row, from 2010 through 2012.

“This new schedule strongly sequences Marvel’s movie debut dates, big screen character introductions and momentum. It maximizes the visibility of our single character-focused films, leading to the highly anticipated release of the multi-character ‘The Avengers’ film in 2012,” said David Maisel, Chairman, Marvel Studios.

Sony Pictures’ and Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man 4” is slated for May 6, 2011. To date, all three motion pictures in the phenomenally successful “Spider-Man” franchise have generated nearly $2.5 billion worldwide theatrically.

Below is Marvel Studios’ 2010-2012 updated release schedule for its slate of self-produced and financed feature films:
Marvel Studios Feature Film Pipeline
Film/Character                   Prior Release Date                Current Release Date
IRON MAN 2                        May 7, 2010                            May 7, 2010
THOR                                      July 16, 2010                          June 17, 2011
CAPTAIN AMERICA        May 6, 2011                             July 22, 2011
THE AVENGERS                July 15, 2011                             May 4, 2012

The release date for IRON MAN 2 remains unchanged. IRON MAN 2 is the sequel to the blockbuster film, IRON MAN, which has grossed nearly $600 million worldwide. Also, yesterday Scarlett Johansson was also confirmed for IRON MAN 2 as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow.

my sassy memories

It’s amazing how a simple song could transport you back, years at a time, to a place, or moment that you somewhat have forgotten. The song “Canon in D minor” played on my iPod and I was pleasantly surprised that it was still there. Memories flashed back like how a movie would…  (Cue: weird sound effects) Familiar odors of smoldering banana-cue filled my nostrils, with sweat treading along my  yellowing nursing uniform. It was a pleasant sunny afternoon, not quite sure what year it was, and I was waiting outside the college grounds for someone.. I t was too darn hot and I rushed to look for shade. She reminded me so much of this song and the movie it was featured in. The long hair, pale complexion, chinky eyes and her sassy attitude always kept me on my toes. The movie “My Sassy Girl” from 2001 was very… uhmmm…  how shall I put it…ah! Nostalgic (?) for me. Too much memories, hormones, and emotions come flailing back. Starring Jeon Ji-hyun (Marry me!) and Cha Tae-hyun, was the No. 2 box office hit in the South Korean capital Seoul, and I never get tired of watching this over and over. (For the record, I’ve seen this movie a dozen times and the remake, about three times now.) Anyway, it hatched three adaptations already: a Japanese drama of the same name, the American remake last 2008 starring Elisha Cuthbert (Marry me too!) and India’s Bollywood version, Ugly Aur Pagli. Nope, I won’t write a review for this movie. Too many have been written and I think it’s obvious enough that I loved it still love it. Up to this day, nothing beats the original version’s simplicity, honesty and quirkiness. (And I’ve experienced a lot of similar experiences just like Gyeon-Woo did.) Instead, I’ll just post some trivia about the movie and some links about it. (Too much drama….can’t…write…anymore…)

  • The runaway soldier at the Girl’s birthday was mentioned before. When Gyeon-woo chased after the Girl and called her baby, he ran back to the restaurant, before he said “You call a wrong number or the dial is not in service, please call again”, the TV announced a news about the runaway soldier.

  • The Girl’s ex-boyfriend was drowned. Why? Because the Girl and Gyeon-woo’s aunt (who is also the exbf’s mother) always cry near the lake. And the Girl asked Gyeon-woo to jump into the water to show how deep it is. She pushed Gyeon-woo into the water and saved him, she was pretending to save her ex-bf. The Girl also threw her necklace into the lake.

  • The 2 men at the bar (where Gyeon-woo and the Girl ordered Golbangee and soju) who were picked by the Girl, are the deputy director of the movie and movie reporter.

  • Gyeon-woo’s handkerchief is the same as the Girl’s ex-bf’s, the only difference is Gyeon-woo’s has circular pattern and ex-bf’s has square pattern.

  • After Gyeon-woo said his “10 rules to follow”, the Girl chased him and passed him at a food stand. The man at the left of Gyeon-woo, who was drinking, is the director of the movie.

  • When Gyeon-woo was hit by the tennis ball on the face several time, he fell, saw the Girl’s panties and smiled ^_^

  • The runaway soldier first used K1A1(Korea manufactured). But in front of the merry-go-round the gun changed to M4A1 (USA manufactured) o.0

  • When Gyeon-woo first carried the Girl to the hotel, there was a piece of newspaper of the quins. The 4 of the 5 brothers showed up in the movie. 1st one is the Hotel owner. 2nd one is the Hotel check in guy. 3rd one is the gangster in Jail. 4th one is the guy next to the subway announcer. The 4 people are all played by one actor.

  • The birthday Email that Gyeon-woo got from the Girl was a flash animation not lycos Email, the address is Disk C/ My Documents. (you can see this on DVD)

  • On the Girl’s second synopsis (the martial art one), the line after the Title says: “whoever dislike this story will get bothered by ghost”

  • At the end, the Girl said: I think i met a man from the future, from your future.” That man from the future is the old guy under the tree. He is also the old Gyeon-woo from the future. Why? Remember the Girl said: “I think UFOs as time machines.” at the cafe? Watch carefully when the Girl reads Gyeon-woo’s letter under the tree, a thing flied from right to left and disappeared in the sky. It’s not just a bird it’s a UFO. The old Gyeon-woo traveled back to the past the UFO. The old man said “fate is building a bridge of chance for someone you love“. Gyeon-woo also said that line at the end of the movie.

The end.
