G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

COMMENTS:

Due to the rise of CG animation during the past ten years, it has become possible for film companies to adapt comicbook heroes (or for this case, action figures) and launch them on the big screen. The most recent ones were the ever popular Superman, our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, the uncanny X-Men, big-ass shooter Wanted, and ultra-cool Watchmen. But hands down, this is the best for this year: G.I. Joe :The Rise of Cobra!

Director Stephen Sommers did an awesome job on this one. Though I had some of the original G.I. Joe action figures when I was a kid, I could vaguely remember all the characters and villains that was on the classic show. However, this film re-introduced them to me in a way that did not make me leave the moviehouse while scratching my head. The characters were given justice by building up their characters and the plot was flawless.

I expected to get disappointed with this movie adaptation of my childhood heroes, but I’m glad I gave in to the hype. (I still would’ve watched it soon anyway.) The whole movie made me reminisce my childhood memories again: early morning cartoons while munching on corn flakes drenched in cold milk together with my two brothers. Was it a good feeling? Yes, it was.

Some were disappointed saying that it was cartoonish AND the dialogue and acting was weak AND there were too many flashbacks.  I say: yes and no.

Yes, it was cartoonish in a sense that a lot of the action sequences (excluding the martial arts parts of course) were CGI heavy. But honestly it was what made this movie awesome! Don’t expect a fictional set of kick -ass soldiers in the near future being lame and just being plain! It was a nice touch that they gave Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) state-of-the-art Accelerator suits to keep up with their more experienced Joe’s.  The acting was not exactly Academy Award winning in this movie but it was enough to keep me amused for two hours. The dialogue was funny, smart and witty where it should be as well. What did they expect? Gone With The Wind-ish like script? Come on! If you just listened in closely, hints were given at the right moments in the film (like why Snake Eyes never speaks!).

The flashbacks on my opinion were an integral part of the movie and it wasn’t boring at all. I didn’t mind the frequent jumps especially with Duke’s and Snake Eyes‘ (Ray Park) pasts. It provided more depth to the story and was a good attempt at explaining the little details the film needed.  Though the CGI was inconsistent throughout the movie though. Some of the CG designed looked very real (the Paris chase scene, the fall of the Eiffel Tower) while some bordered on being too cartoonish (Underwater chase scene).

On to the fight scenes…it was just great! Though the coolest fights were between the young and adult ninjas, and though this is supposed to be a “soldier” movie,  the ninja swordfights made this movie really interesting. The plot was a great change to the usual hero genre: it was the heroes having a hard time keeping up with the villains! Keeping me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole movie!

Over-all, it was a great movie. Great visul effects, fast-paced and very action-packed! I’m looking forward to the sequel of this film. Go Joe!
